Lemon, pastry, white flowers and crushed rocks all come alive in the 2011 Chardonnay Amphitheater Block. More focused and vibrant than the Home Block, the Amphitheater is all about energy, tension and focus. Readers will need to cellar the 2011 for at least 6-12 months. There is a lot to look forward to once the wine comes together a little bit more. (7/ 2013)

Very few bottles of this terroir driven Chardonnay make it to Colorado.  These wines drink well on release but will also age well.  The grapes come from 30 year old vines that have been dry farmed and worked by hand. No insecticides were used in the process.  Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in 25% new French Barrels.

On the subject of Varner's Chardonnays:In the August of the 2011 edition of the Wine Advocate Antonio Galloni wrote:  "They are fairly large-scaled wines that at the same time retain considerable minerality and structure in a style that is distinctive of the Santa Cruz Mountains, but that stands apart from the lusher, oakier style of wine many people associate as typical of California Chardonnay... Readers should do whatever they can to taste these majestic Chardonnays."
