Down the hill from the Chateau, in the well-drained, sandier portion of the property that slopes toward the Garonne, the Armands cultivate Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for their overachieving Bordeaux Rouge. As in previous vintages, the emphasis is on a straightforward expression of terroir, rather than a reliance on reductive techniques and new oak. There's ample blackcurrant fruit here, as well as a gravelly and herbaceous dimension that's typical of the southern end of Bordeaux. This is the perfect partner for a mid-week pepper steak or entrecote.
